Democracy Is Only One Of The Ways To Achieve Social Harmony

中文版

On the fisrt anniversary of Yellow Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong, there are people holding retreats or reviews for commemorating the campaign.

First of all, we have to study and review the basic knowledge of democracry; for example, what are democracy and its purpose? Why democracy? Democracy, or having one, is only one of the ways to achieve social harmony. There are various interpretations on the spirit of democracy, so we can conclude that the spirit of democracy is "Majority Ruling Over but Respecting Minority", or "Obeying Majority, Respecting Differences". In terms of social harmony, "majority ruling over minority" is a way to settle social disputes; "majority respecting minority" is a way to avoid bullying social vulnerable groups. As a result, the society should become more harmonious. If having democracry does not lead to social harmony, why do we have to insist having one so that there are more resentments and sufferings in our society?

Understanding this, in the whole process of Yellow Umbrella Revolution, Hong Kong sociey did not go towards the social harmony; in opposite, it split into groups against one another. Some groups even used force to crash the police cordon line and Legislative Council Complex, spreading the seeds of resentments and hurting the social harmony. The most rediculous part was that some of the groups starting the campaign did not condemn the violence acts at all! In other words, in terms of getting closer to social harmony, the whole campaign was a total failure.

Democracy is only one of the ways to achieve social harmony; if people don't understand this, they don't go anywhere on the way to democracy even though thousands of retreats and reviews are holding.

Postscripts

1. Yellow Umbrella Revolution got into the wrong road, causing the failure at the end. Not only there will be no democracy in Hong Kong indefinitely, but also the whole campaign will be a negative example for mainland China to pursue democracy. Many mainlanders show disapproval of the campaign causing the breakup of Hong Kong society, possibly causing mainland China not having democracy indefinitely!

2. There are many ways to pursue democracy. During the campaign, organizers may change the ways due to changes, so it is hard and impossible to state the best way. However, surely, the period of pursuing democracy is indefitely long, and it must conform to the real meaning of democracy and its purpose, in order to avoid being negative examples by some not wanting democracy at all. Only if China is on the road to democracy, democracy in Hong Kong certainly has the best protection.
